Covenant of Grace
YHWH historically administering the covenant of grace by formerly establishing prophecy and kingship to rule his people through a human ruler after his own heart.
God is preserving and redeeming his people, through judgment,… by maintaining his covenant through hope, judgement,… so they can worship him in a new creation.
Deuteronomistic History
It is a view that a deuteronomist/single author composed some if not all of the historical books and some of the Prophets in the second century BC of Israel. (JMP)
Rest
Dwelling in God’s presence as his covenantal people in obedience. To live in harmony with his law. Josh 1:13
Judge
A deliverer and savior; a judicial servant. They serve the theocracy as interim Kings, which prepares Israel to be ruled.
Angel of the Lord
A messenger sent to encourage or foretell, as seen in Joshua and Judges. Potentially a theophany.
Idolatry
Idolatry is when people put their trust in any other object apart from God. Idolatry leads to exile.
Apostasy
To egregiously and publicly turn away from God.
Samuel
Samuel was the last Judge and anointed the first king of Israel and king David.
Saul
The first king of Israel, anointed by Samuel. A man after the people’s heart. Disobeyed God and gave unlawful sacrifices.
Davidic Covenant
Established to where God’s people will dwell in his kingdom according to his kingship (2 Sam. 7:12). YHWH will preserve the kingdom, it will not depend on David’s sons. Nature of the kingdom is built for His name.
Solomon
David’s son who asks for wisdom and receives it. He got the privilege of building a grand temple for YHWH and was very prosperous. However, he turned to idolatry and broke every instruction for kings as put forth in Deuteronomy.
Elijah
He is a protagonist for God and an antagonist against the kings; suffered persecution, performed miracles including raising the dead, and did not die (instead was taken up into heaven).
Assyrian Exile (Israel)
Israel (the Northern Kingdom/10 tribes) was taken captive by Assyria circa 722. A curse of the law for disobedience.
Babylonian Exile
Babylonian Exile (Judah) – 586-587 BC, the Babylonian exile is the historical parameters of Kings. A curse of the law for disobedience.
Temple
The place of worship, house of God. Symbolized God dwelling with the people.
Exile
A disciplinary curse for disobedience, but a means of gathering and preserving God’s people. The holy one will deliver his people from exile not only physical but eschatalogical exile, into a restored creation in which Jesus will consummate the covenant of grace.
Hosea
8th century prophet. Hosea prosecutes judgment and calls the people to repentance, to return and abide in covenant through the picture provided by his life in enduring with a wife of whoredom.
New Exodus
An image Isaiah prophecies about. In the New Exodus, Israel receives both judgment and salvation. It is a punishment to the nations for disobedience but also the way to restoration with God. Additionally, it is a means by which Israel becomes a witness to the nations.
Amos
8th century prophet; talks about the covenant lawsuit because they have rejected God’s laws. Day of the Lord is one of the themes.
Remnant
A subset of God’s people He will preserve and purify by grace through judgment in order to build His kingdom. True Israel.
Day of the Lord
God’s appointed time of judgment; terrifying, but also ushers in restoration and life.
