Lesson 1 - In the beginning
Gospel –> Spread the word of jesus/god.
Jesus is the word. –> The incarnate word of god.
The word was there in the beginning.
Incarnate - in flesh
John is claiming that to really understand who Jesus is, you need to start way back in the beginning.
God created the world and brought order to the universe.
Jesus needs to be human and god so that he can teach the word of god.
He can communicate to humans whilst knowing all.
How is it possible for God to be 3- in-1?
–> Three persons and one being.
Being - what
person - who
He sympathises and empathises with humans. He speaks about god in a way humans can comprehend.
Lesson 2 - six stone jars
- jesus’ first sign. –> Water to wine
They were at a wedding in cana. There was no wine left. Jesus turned the water into wine.
Having no wine meant that shame would be brought on the family.
’ My hour has not yet come’ –>
JOhn records jesus saying his “ hour has come” just before he is arrested, tried and crucified.
water jars - purification
six jars –> incompletedness.
Discipes believed in jesus and trusted.
–> purpose is to record his signs.
Memory verse
- John 20:31
“These things are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the christ, The son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” - Jesus is the son of god and we can have life in his name.
Lesson 3
- Nicodemus knows jesus is god.
- Member of the jewish ruling council.
No one can enter the kingdom of god unless they are born of water and the spirit. - Being part of gods kingdom is about being born again.
You cna become a part of god’s kingdom
Born of the spirit -means being given life as the spirit of Jesus.
WE cna be saved by believing in jesus and god.
Lesson 4 - living water
” I am he”
Jesus interacts with a samaritan woman and offers her water.
–> She is an outcast.
Jesus puts past generational hate
Living water = the holy spirit which here is associated with true satisfaction and life.
Jesus will give the holy spirit to those who believe until after Jesus died and rose from the dead.
- Never thirst
- Gift of god
- water will giev them eternal life.
- spring of water
Water = life
How is the woman and Jesus’ interaction similar t that of Jesus and nicodemus.
Lesson 5 - Bread of life
The isrealites gave the name “ I am”
7 i am statements –> They complement jesus’ miracles.
They weren’t just acts of power byt they demonstrate the meaning of his ministry and teachings.
- God told moses his people should live through the ten commandments and the mitzvot.
God gave the isrealites food.
5 loaves and 2 pieces of fish.
” I am the bread of life.” –> He is essential for life.
lesson 6 - Light, Gate and the shepherd
Jesus performs a sign
It causes controversy
Those around are faced with a choice to believe or reject him.
“ I am the light of the world.” –> Jesus is the light of the world. Shows guidance.
“Lord I believe “ –> the blind man said.
” I am the good shepherd “ –> Jesus protects his people and is the good leader and lays down his life for his people.
Lesson 7 - the ressurection and life
Jesus resurrected lazarus. Resurrection is giving life and raising from the dead.
” I am the ressurection and the life.”
Some people were threatened by him whilst others believed in him.
