Archetype
An image, a descriptive detail, a plot pattern, or a character type that occurs frequently in literature, myth, religion, or folklore, and is therefore believed to evoke profound emotions in the reader because it awakens a primordial image in his unconscious memory, and thus calls into play illogical but powerfully resonating responses.
Myth
Anonymous stories that have their roots in the primitive beliefs of races or nations and present supernatural episodes as a means of interpreting natural events in an effort to make concrete and particular a special perception of man or a cosmic view.
Functions of Myth
- Myths ease our way into the tremendous mystery of the world, making it easier to understand.
- Myths give us a cohesive worldview in which all things fit together.
- Myths support a moral order, telling us why some things are wrong and others right.
- Myths help the individual to understand his role in the world as a human.
