Freedom of expression, religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
1st amendment
Trick: “Freedom comes first”
Protects the rights of individual citizens to keep and bear arms.
2nd amendment

Prohibits soldiers from temporarily residing in private homes without the owner’s permission.
3rd amendment
Trick: “No soldiers allowed - 3 words”
Protects people’s right to privacy, prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures by the government.
4th amendment
Trick: “Search = Warrant”
No person without the grand jury indictment or punished twice for the same offense.
5th amendment
Trick: “No random arresting”
Rights of accused in criminal cases, including legal representation and a fair speedy trial.
6th amendment

Guarantees a trial by jury.
7th amendment

Insures that punishments for crimes are not excessive, cruel, or unusual.
8th amendment

People retain rights not listed in the United States Constitution.

Power not given to the federal government is given to the people or states.

Individual cannot sue state federal courts.
11th amendment

Electoral College must cast separate ballots for president and vice president.

Abolished slavery and involuntary servitude.
13th amendment

All persons born or naturalized in the United States enjoy full rights.
14th amendment

States cannot prevent a person from voting because of race, creed, color.
15th amendment
Trick: “Everyone’s allowed to vote”
Establishes Congress’s right to impose a federal income tax.
16th amendment
Trick: “16 year olds pay taxes”
Provides for popular election of United States senators.
17 amendment
Trick: “Elections can be popular”
No alcoholic beverages to be bought or sold in the United States.
18 amendment
Trick: “18 year olds = alcohol illegal”
This amendment provides all women, who are U.S. citizens, the right to vote in all elections.
19 amendment
Trick: “LET WOMEN VOTE!”
Changed the date the president takes office from March 4th to January 20th (four-year term).
20th amendment
Trick: “Jan. 20 = president starts”
Repealed prohibition and voided the 18th amendment.
21st amendment
Trick: “21 years old = alcohol is legal”
No person shall be elected to the office of president more than twice (two terms).
22nd amendment

Gave residents of Washington D.C., the right to vote in presidential elections.
23rd amendment
Trick: “M.J. to Washington”
Forbids taxing voters before they vote in national elections.
