bing key concepts Flashcards
define growth
progressive increase in the size or weight of an animal over time, this includes embryonic and postnatal growth and development
define development
Progressive changes that affect behaviour and function of the organism. Growth capability, maturation, physiological changes.
what is the diffrence betweeen growth and development
Consider growth as getting bigger and development is the change of cell, like specialisation or structural changes.
The development effects the FUNCTION
What are the two types of patterns in growth?
Isometric growth: growth of all tissues occurring at the same rate. (fish and reptiles) remember tis occurs throughout the whole life, this is the minority.
Allometric growth: growth of tissue occurring at different rates relative to each other. (human or cow body proportions changing) consider fat being the last tissue growth in mammals anf first in bone and muscle
what is allometric growth
Growth of tissue occurring at different rates relative to each other
what is isometric growth
growth of all tissues occuring at the same rate
when an animal is Large for gestational weight is above what percentilel age
90th percentile
when an animal is small for gestational weight is below what percentilel age
10th percentile
whhich pettern of growth is most common
allometric (tissue growth as diffrent rates)
There are three main types of tissue which develop with growth. Fat, muscle and bone. which are fastest and slower
fat grows the fastest
bone is the slowest
a growth curve is in what shape
Sigmoid flexture (S shape)
list some key things that are needed when graphin the growth curve
tile on x and y axis.
standard diviation
line connections,
values plotted are the mean value
an increase in growth velocity postantaly is what?
growth spurt
what factors effect growth postnataly
genetic, enviromental and nutrional
