bio 6 Flashcards
(13 cards)
what letters signal that is heterozygous
Dd-a capital letter and a lower case letter
what letters signal that is homozygous
DD or dd-both capital or lower case
advantages of embryonic screening
can find out if the embryo has a inherited disorder
can prepare for the baby
can decide whether to carry on with the pregnancy
what is the genome?
the entire genetic material
asexual reproduction
requires one parent to produce offspring
there is no fusion of gametes
offspring are genetically identical to the parent or to each other meaning they are clones
exact copies of the genetic information
process of meiosis:
only takes place in reproductive organs-testes in males and ovaries in females
1.all the chromosomes are copied
2.the cell then divides into two
3.now both of these cells divide one more time to form gametes
4.the chromosomes are single not paired -halved the number of chromosomes
5.four gametes-genetically different
what is a gamete
is a sex cell and contains 23 chromosomes
what is an allele?
a specific form of a gene
what does recessive mean?
a recessive trait will only be expressed if the individual has two copies of the recessive allele for example (bb)
how to tell whether it it is dominant or recessive
if it is Bb then it is dominant-heterozygous as it has a capital letter but if it was bb then it would be recessive-homozygous
what happens if the individual has one dominant and one recessive allele
if the individual has one recessive and one dominant allele the dominant trait will be expressed
what does a mutation mean?
a change in the organisms DNA
