Bio-Chem: Beers Law Flashcards
(13 cards)
What’s Beer’s Law?
A=εbc
What does A mean?
Absorbance
What does ε mean?
Constant
What does b mean?
Distance
What does c mean?
Concentration
A device used to measure the color transmitted from a chemical solution
Spectrophotometer
What equation is used to calculate absorbance from transmittance?
A = 2-log(% Transmittence)
Why do you need a blank solution when using a spectrophotometer?
It’s the base solution you are adding to it, making that solution 0,0
What is transmittance?
The colors that pass through an object
What is absorbance?
The color absorbed by an object
What does a high ε tell you?
A chemical is effective at absorbing light
How does the path length (b) affect absorbance?
The longer the path, the more light wil be absorbed.
If a 1.0 M solution has an absorbance of 0.50, what is the equation you would use to solve this?
0.50 = ε*1.0
