Bio Evolution Unit Flashcards
(15 cards)
Phylogeny
Study of the evolutionary history of lineages of organisms.
Cladogram
Helps to visualize the evolutionary lineage of organisms.
Five Sources of Genetic Variation
Mutations
Genetic Recombinations
Lateran Gene Transfer
Single Gene and Polygenic Traits
Mutation
A change in the DNA sequence of an organism. (Sickle Cell Disease)
Genetic Recombination
Exchange of Genetic Information. (Prophase I during Meiosis)
Lateral Gene Transfer
Giving Genetic Material Not Through Sex/Reproduction.(Conjugation)
Single Gene
Influenced only by one gene with only two phenotypes. (Type of ear lobe, dimples, widow’s peak, etc.)
Polygenic Traits
influenced by more than two genes with more than two phenotypes. (Height, Weight, Hair color, etc.)
Gene Pool
A common grouping of genes within a population.
Allele frequency
The number of times an allele occurs is a gene pool. (Expressed as a % of all alleles in that gene pool.)
Evolution Definition
Involving any change in the frequency of alleles in a population over time.
Speciation
Two separate species evolving.
Species
Closely related: mate and produce fertile offspring.
Reproduvtive Isolation
Species are so different, they no longer mate.
