Evolution
Is a change in genetic composition of a population over time
what are the 3 levels of evolution
- molecular level ( genes are passed down)
-population ( interbreeding ) - Individual level ( who survives and produces)
How is animal diversity generated
-Gentic variation( mutation, immigratin and horizontal transfer
-Devleopmental process
Why do changes in the genetic makeup of the population occur
- The addition of new genes ( mutation, immigration, and horizontal transfer)
- shifts in the frequency of genes within the population
Gene frequency changes happen
- because of genetic drift( random process) and natural selection(nonrandom process.
An example of genetic Drift
cats and aspirin
Ka/ks=1 in cats for the gene that protects them from animals
ka/ks<1 for the gene that is important for detoxifying compounds in animals it’s under selection
What is important for promoting genetic drift
small population
Evolution is driven by
-variation
- Natural selection
- Heritability
what are the constraints of evolution
- chemical and physical constraints
Evolution due to natural selction results in
adaptations ( traits that enhance the survival/ reproduction
of individuals
