BIO FINAL EXAM 3 Flashcards
(54 cards)
What is ecology?
The study of how organisms interact with each other and their environment.
What is a population?
A group of the same species living in one area.
What is a community?
Different species living and interacting in one area.
What is a habitat?
The physical place where an organism lives.
What is an ecosystem?
All living and non-living things in an area.
What is a biome?
A large region with similar climate and life forms.
What is the biosphere?
All areas of Earth where life exists.
What is a niche?
The function a species offers to its environment
What are community interactions?
Ways species affect each other (e.g., predation, parasitism).
What is co-evolution?
Two species evolve in response to each other (e.g., flower and pollinator).
What is predation?
One organism eats another.
How do organisms protect from predators?
Camouflage, mimicry, warning colors.
What is adaptive coloration?
Color helps blend into environment.
What is aposematic coloration?
Bright colors warn of danger/toxins.
What are two types of mimicry?
Batesian: Harmless mimics harmful
Müllerian: Two harmful species resemble each other
What is parasitism?
One benefits, one is harmed.
What is interspecific vs. intraspecific competition?
Interspecific = between species; Intraspecific = within one species.
What is Gause’s Principle?
No two species can occupy the same niche — one will outcompete the other.
What’s the difference between fundamental and realized niche?
Fundamental = potential role; Realized = actual role due to competition.
What is symbiosis?
Close long-term relationship between species.
What is mutualism?
Both species benefit.
What is commensalism?
One benefits, the other is unaffected.
What is succession?
Changes in a community over time.
What is primary succession?
Starts from bare rock (no soil).
