bio lab exam 2 study guides 4/5 Flashcards
(21 cards)
Wood is a complex carbohydrate called cellulose. What product is produced both by burning wood and by chemical respiration of carbohydrates?
carbon dioxide
What are the products of photosynthesis?
glucose and oxygen
What happened to the water solution with phenol red when you breathed into it?
the color changed from red to yellow/ orange
Carbon dioxide, which is acidic when dissolved in water, changed the color of the phenol red form red to orange.
In the lab what happened when phenol red was added to water?
turned red
When Elodea stems were inserted into the orange solution what happened to the solution over time? What caused the change?
The solution turned back into its original red color because the plant absorbed carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
You added Sodium Azide (actually, your TA did) in order to do what?
Sodium Azide interfered with the electron transport system, preventing aerobic respiration.
What naturally-occurring gas contributes to the process of global warming and how is it related to photosynthesis and cell respiration?
Carbon dioxide. Respiration produces carbon dioxide and photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide to make sugar and oxygen.
A respirometer experiment testing the ability of yeast cells to utilize various fuels for respiration yielded the following information:
Sucrose-2.2, Glycerol-0.08, Protein-0.5. Which substance was most effective?
Sucrose (carbohydrate)
According to the answers published on our web site what was the order of effectiveness of the respiratory fuels used to produce respiration in yeast?
Sucrose, glycerol, and protein.
List four substances necessary for a plant to grow.
Water, sunlight, carbon dioxide, and oxygen.
What are the 2 most abundant “greenhouse gasses” and which one is most abundant?
carbon dioxide and water vapor .
1 is water vapor
During what stage in a cell cycle does DNA replicate?
interphase
What are the names of the 4 bases that form the “sequence” of DNA?
Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, Thymine
What would the complementary DNA sequence be for this DNA single strand: CATATACGCATATAC ?
GTATATGCGTATATG
GTATATGCGTATATG
What would happen if you used one restriction enzyme to cut the DNA found at the crime scene and different ones to cut the DNA of the suspects?
If you used one restriction enzyme at crime scene and a different one on the suspect, you would not find a matching sequence of DNA because the specific sequences you are looking for would be different.
What exactly did you need to see to determine if a suspect’s DNA matched the crime scene?
You needed a sample of DNA from the crime scene and a sample from the suspect and a gel electrophoresis apparatus. From there you ran the test to see of the DNA from the crime scene matched the suspects from the results of the gel electrophoresis.
In our gel electrophoresis, why do some DNA fragments migrate farther from their starting point than others in the same lane of the gel?
dye idk
What 2 types of chemicals make up the “backbone” of the 2 strands of a DNA double-helix?
sugars and phosphates
What type of chemicals make up the rungs of the ladder that join across from one DNA backbone to it’s parallel other backbone?
the complementary pairs of nitrogen bases
a = t g = c
How many different kinds of ladder components are there in DNA?
4
a = t g = c
What are the letters for those chemicals from #13 but not found in DNA, instead, write the letters found in RNA:
g
u
a
c
