bio paper 4 Flashcards
(12 cards)
why might a mutation be dominant/recessive (refer to effect)?
if a disease produces a protein, it might be dominant, but only preventing on from being made (or just not producing one) could mean it is recessive
why would there be a difficulty in moving limbs
impulses not reaching!! (could be in any condition)
how does genetic engineering work?
modifying an organism’s DNA by introducing a gene from another organism with a specific characteristic
Where are the different alleles of a gene relatively found?
On the same pair of chromosomes
In which two ways does the body’s immune system destroy invading cells?
- phagocytes engulf
- lymphocytes produce antibodies
what sampling technique is to estimate distribution?
using a quadrat with a TRANSECT LINE
what sampling technique is to estimate number in an area?
using a quadrat with RANDOM SAMPLING
what sampling technique is used to estimate the number of one specific species in a habitat?
capture-recapture
how can carbon dioxide levels be controlled?
adding a carbonate solution
what is the vector in genetic engineering?
the plasmid in the bacterium
why would killing plasma cells be helpful to treat a disease?
if that disease produces a protein, killing the plasma would stop that production
how is the rate of meiosis in an older women?
takes longer
