Bio - respiration and human transport Flashcards
(8 cards)
define respiration
Respiration is a chemical reaction in cells that releases energy.
Define breathing
Breathing is the movement of air into and out of the lungs
Define gas exchange
Gas exchange is the diffusion of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out at the alveoli.
What are the parts of the human gas exchange system?
Lungs, diaphragm, intercostal muscles, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, and capillaries.
How do the ribs, intercostal muscles, and diaphragm help with breathing?
They change chest volume and pressure through inhalation and exhalation
What does cartilage do in the trachea?
Keeps the airway open so air can pass easily.
How do goblet cells and cilia protect the lungs?
Goblet cells make mucus to trap dirt; cilia move it out.
