Observations & Phylogenetics
Archenteron
the endoderm-lined cavity, formed during gastrulation, that develops into the digestive tract of an animal
Blastodisc
small disc-shaped structure formed early in development, containing nucleus and cytoplasm; sits on top of the yolk in bird/fish/reptile eggs
Ectoderm
outermost germ layer of gastrula; gives rise to outer covering, and sometimes nervous system, inner ear, lens of eye.
Gastrula
three-layered embryo, comprised of: ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm
Mesoderm
middle germ layer of gastrula; develops into notochord, lining of coelom, muscles, skeleton, gonads, kidneys, and most of circulatory system
Endoderm
innermost germ layer of gastrula; lines the archenteron, gives rise to liver, pancreas, lungs, and lining of digestive tract
Blastomere
early embryonic cell arising during cleavage
Cleavage
succession of rapid cell division w/o significant growth during early embryonic development that converts the zygote to a ball of cells
Zygote
diploid cell produced by union of haploid gametes during fertilization; a fertilized egg
Primitive streak
a thickening future anterior-posterior axis on surface of early avian/mammalian embryo, caused by piling up of cells as they congregate at midline before moving into the embryo
Spiral cleavage
in protostomes, planes of division are diagonal to vertical axis of the embryo; cells of each tier sit in the grooves between cells of adjacent tiers
Totipotent
describing a cell that can give rise to all parts of the embryo and adult, as well as extraembryonic membranes
Blastula
a hollow ball of cells that marks the end of the cleavage stage
Neurula
Embryo at developmental stage at which neuralation occurs.
Radial cleavage
in deuterostomes, planes of cell division are perpendicular or parallel to vertical axis of embryo, aligning tiers of cells one above the other
