Biodiversity Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a species?
A basic unit of classification. Members of the same species are able to breed to produce fertile, living offspring.
What is the binomial system?
A way of classifying organisms, and uses 2 names: the genus and species. Written in italics with no capital for the species.
What is courtship behaviour?
The actions organisms carry out to attract a mate and reproduce. Only members of the same species will respond to the same courtship behaviours, which prevents interbreeding.
What is classification?
The grouping of living organisms
What are the 2 main types of classification?
Artificial and phylogenic
What is artificial classification?
Grouping organisms based off physical characteristics, eg number of legs, wings, colour.
What is phylogenic classification?
Grouping organisms based on evolutionary origins, divides species into groups that are in larger groups.
