Biodiversity And Classification Flashcards
(11 cards)
Define species richness
The measure of the number of different species in a community
What is index of diversity
It describes the relationship between the number of species in a community and the number of individuals in each species
(Number of individuals and population size)
How to investigate diversity
• the frequency of measurable or observable characteristics
• the base sequence of DNA
• the base sequence of mRNA
• the amino acid sequence of the proteins encoded by DNA and mRNA
What is phylogeny?
The study of the evolutionary history of groups of organisms. It tells us who’s related to whom and how closely related they are.
What is a taxon?
Each group of the taxa, the levels of groups used to classify organisms
What are the three domains?
Eukarya bacteria and Archaea
What are the levels of taxa?
Kingdom phylum class order family genus species
What is a species?
A group of similar organisms able to reproduce to give fertile offspring
What is courtship behaviour?
Specific Behaviour carried out by organisms to attract a mate of the right species
Why is courtship behaviour species specific?
It allows members of the same species to recognise each other preventing into breeding and making reproduction more successful.
What is biodiversity?
The variety of living organisms in an area
