biodiversity and conservation Flashcards
(9 cards)
what are three types of biodiversity?
They are genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity.
Why is biodiversity important?
Biodiversity is important because it allows us to get food and resources that help us live, like medicine.
What are the direct and indirect values of biodiversity?
The direct values are economic things like food clothing and medicine. Indirect values which are plants that give oxygen and remove carbon dioxide and natural processes that make water safe to drink, but it is hard to put economic value on these things.
What are the threats to biodiversity?
Threats are overexploitation, habitat loss, fragmentation of habitat, pollution, and introduced species.
How is the current extinction rate different from the background extinction rate?
The current extinction rate is a lot higher than the background extinction rate.
How can the decline of a single species affect an entire ecosystem?
Other species might rely on that species for something like food, and when they don’t have food, they will die, then the species that relied on them will also die.
What are the two classes of natural resources?
Renewable and nonrenewable resources.
What are the methods used to conserve biodiversity?
Biodiversity hot spots, sustainable use, corridors between habitat fragments, and legal stuff.
What are two techniques used to restore biodiversity?
Bioremediation and biological augmentation.
