Biodiversity - Lesson 2 week 1 Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is Biodiversity
The variety of all life on Earth
What is the term used to describe the ‘sphere’ of the water
Hydrosphere
How far does the Biosphere extend into the atmosphere - Provide an example
As far as it can support life eg. the maximum height birds can fly
How far does the Biosphere extend into the Lithosphere - Provide an example
As deep as it can support life eg. The deepest tree roots
What is a biome - Provide an example
A broader classification of an ecosystem / a large geographical area with a certain climate, vegetation, and animal life eg. Amazon rainforest in South America
What is an Ecosystem - Provide an example
A self-sustaining unit made of a community of organisms in an area + the physical environment (abiotic + biotic factors of an area) eg. Grassland
What is a community - Provide an example
An interacting group of species in a particular location eg. coral reefs
What is a population - Provide an example
A group of individuals of the same species living in an area eg. a pack of wild dogs
What is an organism - Provide an example
Living things that can respite, grow, respond to stimuli, consume, reproduce, and produce energy eg. a cat
How is Biodiversity described (3 levels)
Ecosystem diversity - Variety of ecosystems in a defined area
Species diversity - Variety of species in an ecosystem
Genetic diversity - Variety of alleles in a populations gene pool
