Biogeochemical Cycles Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the four types of cycles?
Water, Carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphorus
What is the Water Cycle?
the continuous movement of water on/above/below Earth’s surface
Why is water important
because it is essential for all living things and most chemical reactions take place in water
What is the equation for Cellular Respiration
C6H1206 + 6O2 –> 6CO2 + 6H20 + 36 ATP
What is the equation for Photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What forms of water are present in the water cycle
liquid (water), solid (ice), gas (water vapor)
What are the steps of the water cycle?
evaporation, sublimation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, runoff, groundwater
What is evaporation?
when water is converted to water vapor due to the sun’s heat
What is sublimation?
when ice/snow is converted to water vapor without melting first (due to sun’s heat)
What is transpiration?
when plants release water vapor through stomata
What is condensation?
when water vapor is converted to water (precipitation)
When does percipitation occur?
When the water droplets get too large during condensation, they fall in the form of rain/snow/hail/etc
What are the four types of cycles?
water, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus
What is the water cycle?
the continuous movement of water on/above/below Earth’s surface
Why is water important?
it is essential for all living things and bc most chemical reaction take place in water
what forms of water are present during the water cycle?
liquid (water), solid (ice), gas (water vapor)
What are the five parts of the water cycle?
Evaporation, Sublimation, Transpiration, Condensation, Runoff/Groundwater
