Biological Approach Flashcards
(7 cards)
Biological approach
Biological approach believes that behaviour is due to genes and the nervous system.
Twin studies are used to determine the likelihood that certain traits have a genetic basis by comparing the concordance rates between pairs of twins. Identical twins (100% same genes) have higher concordance rates than non identical twins (50% same genes).
Monozygotic twins
Identical twins
Dizygotic twins
Non identical
Genotype
The particular set of genes that a person possesses.
Phenotype
The characteristics of an individual determined by both genes and the environment.
Evolution
The changes in inherited characteristics in a biological population over successive generations. (Darwin- natural selection)
Biological approach evaluation
Uses precise and highly scientific methods (fMRI’s, twin studies).- reliable data.
Real life application- increased understanding of biochemical processes in the brain led to the development of psychoactive drugs- depression.
Can’t separate nature and nurture- they are brought up in the same environment.
