Biological field techniques Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the sampling techniques
Transect study
Point count
Remote detection
What are the types of sampling
Random
Stratified
Systematic
What are some of the risks associated with fieldwork
terrain
adverse weather conditions
contact with harmful organisms
isolation
How can we minimise risks associated with fieldwork
risk assessment
take precautions
work in a safe sensible manner
What does sampling allow
sampling will allow you to know what kind of plants and animals are in a particular habitat without having to count every single one
What does sampling strategy therefore have to be and include
- efficient and cover enough area to give a good representation of your habitat
- include bot biotic and abiotic factors so you can determine any relationships, differences in ares or changes over time
How do we sample biotic factors
quadrats
pitfall traps
Transect line
kick sampling
Tree beating
Sweep nets
point counts
camera traps
scat sampling
What are sampling and abiotic factors
soil sampls, pH meters, moisture metres, thermometers, anemometers, oxygen probes, humidity, water velocity
What should sampling always do
be apprpriate to the relevant organism
minimise impact on wild species and habitats
consideration should be made into rare and vulnerable species and habitats that are protected by legislation.
a point count involves …
observation and recording of individuals from a fixed point location
this can be compared to other point locations or with data from the same location gathered at other times
Point counts are a common way to gather info on bird populations
