Biological Interventions Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the disease-centred model?
Drugs correct an abnormal brain state
What is the drug-centred model?
Drugs create an altered physiological state. Drugs do not specifically and uniquely target psychiatric symptoms.
d: agonist drug
Increase the action of a neurotransmitter
How do agonist drugs work?
By increasing its availability by preventing re-uptake at the synapses, preventing degradation within the synaptic cleft or replacing low levels of a particular neurotransmitter with its pharmacological equivalent.
d: antagonist drug
Inhibit the action of a neurotransmitter
how do antagonist drugs work?
by decreasing the availability of the neurotransmitter or replacing the active transmitters with an inert chemical.
What do Anxiolytics do?
a class of medications used to prevent or treat anxiety symptoms or disorders
What is the name for the side effect of antipsychotics that is characterised by repetitive, involuntary, purposeless movements
tardive dyskinesia
How do anxiolytics work?
Impact regions of the limbic system, producing muscle relaxing effects, reduction of alertness/hypervigilance, and sedation
How do antidepressants work?
Block the reuptake of serotonin by limiting re-absorption in the presynaptic cell, therefore increasing levels of neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft.
How do antipsychotics work?
Block dopamine D2 receptors, reducing dopamine signalling a reduced activity of dopamine in basal ganglia, which controls movement and influences thought, emotion and motivation.
