Biological Molecule Tests Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
Test for Carbohydrates
A
- Add sample to a test tube
- Add 2cm3 of iodine
- If starch is present, the solution will go orange to blue-black
2
Q
Test for Proteins
A
- Add sample to a test tube
- Add 2cm3 of biuret reagent
- If protein is present, the solution will go blue to purple
3
Q
Test for Lipids
A
- Add sample to test tube
- Add 2cm3 of cold water
- Add 2cm3 of ethanol
- Shake and a white emulsion should form
4
Q
Test for Reducing Sugar (glucose)
A
- Add Benedict’s reagent to the sample you are testing
- Heat in a waterbath for 5 minutes
- If a reducing sugar is present, a colour change from blue to yellow/green/red should be observerd
5
Q
Test for Non-Reducing Sugar (Sucrose)
A
- Mix non-reducing sugar with HCl and boil it
- Coll the solution and then add NaOH to make the solution alkaline
- Add benedicts and reheat
- A coluor change from blue to yellow/green/red should be observered
6
Q
Why can’t a non-reducing sugar be tested normally?
A
Non-reducing sugfars cannot reduce Cu2+ due to the chemical group needed to reduce it being in a glycosidic bond and so needs to be hydrolysed
