Biological Molecules Flashcards
(17 cards)
monomer
smaller units from which larger molecules are made - eg monosaccarides, amino acids, nucleotides
polymer
Molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together.
e.g. polysaccharides (starch, glycogen, cellulose), polypeptides, DNA, RNA.
Lipids are NOT polymers because they are NOT made of repeating units.
condensation reaction
A reaction where bonds are formed;
and water is removed;
hydrolysis reaction
A reaction where bonds are broken;
and water is removed;
carbohydrates contain…..
C, H and O
Function of carbs
- energy source (glucose in respiration).
- energy store (starch in plants, glycogen in animals).
- structure (cellulose in cell walls of plants).
the bond formed between 2
monosaccharides by a condensation reaction?
Glycosidic
How is a disaccharide formed?
Two monosaccharides;
are joined by a glycosidic bond;
formed by a condensation reaction;
Glucose + Glucose =
Maltose
Glucose + Fructose =
Sucrose
Glucose + Galactose =
Lactose
How is a polysaccharide formed?
When many monosaccharides are joined together by condensation reactions.
Glycogen is formed by …..
condensation of alpha glucose
Starch is formed by …….
condensation of alpha glucose
Cellulose is formed by ……….
condensation of beta glucose
Starch =
amylose and amylopectin
