Biological Psychology Flashcards
(18 cards)
Sensory neurons
carry info to the brain from receptors in organs and skin
Motor neurons
carry information to muscles and glands signaling relaxation and contraction of muscles.
Biopsychology
the study of how biology influences behavior
Nerve
a bundle of neurons
Neurons
cells that act as interconnected information processors
Glial cells
nerve cells that assist neurons by providing structural support, nutrition, insulation and communication.
Cell body
contains nucleus, genetic info and provides information for the neuron
Dendrites
receive info from other neurons
Axon
a single tube that extends from the cell body and carries information from the neuron to other cells.
Axon terminals
contain vesicles that house neurotransmitters
Myelin sheath
protects axons and increase the speed of messages
Synapse
gap between neurons
Action potential
the process of pushing an impulse down the axon
All or none law
a neuron is either stimulated or it is not
Repolarization period
the time after the action potential when a neuron can’t fire while it repolarizes.
Central nervous system
the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
everything else in the nervous system outside the central nervous system.
Somatic nervous system
communicates information along sensory and motor nerves to perform voluntary functions
