Biology #1 Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is a compound microscope??
A microscope that combines two lenses
What is resolving power?
the ability to distinguish between two close objects
What is magnification power?
The #of times larger an image appears
When you look into a microscope, the object is _________,_________ and ____________
magnified, reversed and inverted
What is the magnification power of the eyepiece lens?
10x
What are the powers of magnification of the three objective lenses?
4x, 10x, and 40x
How do you calculate the total magnification power?
power of objective lens X power of eyepiece lens
What is an example of a stronger microscope?
Scanning electron microscope (200, 000x)`
What are the five characteristics of living things?
R esponds to environment R eproduces G row G ets rid of waste N eeds energy
What is an example of “Responds to environment?”
we respond to hunger by eating
What is an example of “Grow?”
Children grow taller, replace cells
What is an example of “Needs energy?”
Plants need sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make food
What is an example of “Reproduces?”
Salmon lay eggs
What is an example of “Gets rid of waste?”
Exhaling carbon dioxide
What is the cell theory?
- the cell is the basic unit of all life
- All living things are made up of one or more cells
- All cells come from other living cells
What are prokaryotic cells?
Cells that do not have organelles with membranes. Ex: Bacteria
What are Eukaryotic cells?
Cells that have organelles with a membrane around them. Ex: Plant and animal cells
Are viruses living or non living?
Viruses are non-living! They need a living cell in order to reproduce.
What is the function of the objective lens?
magnifies the object
What is the function of the eyepiece?
lens closest to the eye
what is the function of the revolving nosepiece?
Allows you to switch magnification
What is the function of the coarse focus knob?
used for focussing at low power
What is the function of the stage clips?
holds the slide in place
What is the function of the fine focus knob?
used for focussing at high power
