Biology Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the function of a lysosome?
It contains digestive enzymes to break down old cells, organelles and pathogens
What organelle modifies proteins by adding starch to them?
The Golgi apparatus
Why is the smooth ER ‘smooth’?
It doesn’t have any ribosomes
What are both flagella and cilia made of?
Microtubules
How do proteins get outside of a cell?
Through exocytosis when the vesicle fuses with a cell membrane
Why do water molecules show cohesion?
They stick to each other through hydrogen bonds formed due to oxygen being more electronegative than hydrogen
What is the general formula for a sugar unit?
Cn(H20)n
How is maltose made?
alpha glucose + alpha glucose
Does beta glucose have its hydroxyl group at the top or bottom?
Top
What bonds are found in carbohydrates?
Glyosidic bonds
