Biology 1.1.2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
The 5 main Subcellular structures in Animal Cells are:
-Nucleus
-Cell Membrane
-Mitochondria
-Ribosomes
-Cytoplasm
Some Subcellular structures are only visible under an…
Electron Microscope.
Functions of Nucleus: (1)
-Contains Genetic Material (DNA) which controls the cell’s activities.
Functions of Cytoplasm: (3)
-Gel-like substance composed of water and dissolved Solutes.
-Supports internal Cell structures.
-Site of many Chem. Reactions.
Functions of Cell Membrane: (2)
-Holds the Cell together.
-Controls which substances enter & exit.
Functions of Ribosomes: (2)
-Found in Cytoplasm.
-Protein Synthesis.
Functions of Mitochondria: (2)
-Aerobic Respiration, releases energy. The Mitochondria is the Powerhouse of the Cell.
-More Mitochondria = higher Metabolism.
What Subcellular structures do Plant Cells have that Animal Cells don’t? (3)
-Cell Wall
-Permanent Vacuole
-Chloroplasts
Functions of Cell Wall: (2)
-Made of Cellulose.
-Gives the Cell extra support, defines shape.
Functions of Chloroplasts: (1)
-Contains green Chlorophyll, absorbs Light Energy, & the Enzymes needed for Photosynthesis.
Functions of Permanent Vacuole: (3)
-Contains Cell Sap, Solution of Sugars & Salts Dissolved in Water.
-Used for storage of certain materials.
-Supports shape of Cell.
