DEFINE DISEASE
Disease is any condition in which the body or parts of the body do not function properly.
DEFINE PATHOGENS
Pathogens are disease causing organisms or agents - e.g. bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites
STEP 1 OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE
- In a population of bacteria, oine bacteria mutates and becomes antibiotic resistant
FUNCTION OF ANTIBIOTICS
Antibiotics are substances that kill or prevent the growth of bacteria.
STEP 2 OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE
- Antibiotcs kill off all bacteria excpt the antibiotic resistant ones
STEP 3 OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE
- Antibiotic-resistant bacteria multiplies, forming a population of antibiotic-resistant bacteria
STEP 4
- Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can transfer their mutation to other bacteria
DEFINE ASPECTS OF VIRUSES
Viruses are pathogens about 1/100th of the size of bacteria
Classed as non-living because they do not need nutrients/produce waste
Must need a host cell to replicate
DEFINE FUNGI
Some are useful - e.g. for food
Some are decomposers
Are made of spores (single cell)
Disease - tinea, thrush, Athletes’ foot, ringworm
DEFINE PARASITE
An organism that lives on or in the body of another organism (host)
Disease - Malaria, Amoebic dysentry
COLD V.S. FLU
COLD - snotty, rhinovirus
FLU - fever, influenza, body aches
