Biology Flashcards
To Prepare For Test (36 cards)
What 3 particles make up the atom and where are they located, and what is their charge?
Proton,Positive, Nucleas
Electron, Negative, Surrounding the Nucleas
Neutron, Neutral, Nucleas
Atom
The Building Block of All Matter
What is an element and what tool we use to organize elements?
An Element is a pure substance that can’t be broken down into other substances. The Tool we use is the Periodic Table.
Isotope
Atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons
Compound
a pure substance formed when 2 or more elements combine
What 2 chemical bonds were described and what happens to the electrons in each?
Covenant and Ionic Bonds. Covenant shares, Ionic takes.
The 3 types of van Der waal forces from weakest to strongest
London Disperian Forces, Dipole-Dipole Interaction, and hydrogen bonding
Chemical reaction
The Process by which atoms or groups of atoms in substances are reorganized into different substances.
List the Reaction Products and plot them on a reaction.
Coefficiants, Chemical Formula, State of Matter, Subscript, Reactants, Reaction Arrow, Products
Activation Energy
The Minimum amount of energy needed for reactants to form products in a chemical reaction
What is the difference between Endo and exothermic reactions?
Endo absorbs energy, Exo releases the energy.
Enzymes
Proteins that speed up biological reactions by powering the activation energy needed to start the reaction.
What do enzymes do for a chemical reaction?
They Start the reaction.
Is water polar or non polar and why?
Polar, because electrons spend more time near the oxygen, and it strongly attracts them.
Homogeneous Mixture with an example.
A mixture with uniform composition througout. Ex: Coffee, Brass
Heterogeneous Mixture with an example
A Mixture in which components remain distinct. Ex: Salad, Smog
Solvent
A Substance in which a substance is dissolvent
Solute
A Substance that gets dissolved
Acid
A Substance that releases hydroxide ions when they are dissolved in water.
Base
A Substance that releases hydroxide ions when they are dissolved in water.
What scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is?
The PH Scale
On this scale what range is acidic, which is basic and which is neutral?
0, most acidic, 14, most basic, 7, neutral
Which element is related to organic chemistry?
Carbon
Name the four macro molecules
carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic Acids
