Biology Flashcards
(24 cards)
What are cells?
They are the basic building blocks of life broken down into two parts: Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic
Prokaryotic
Lacks nucleus
Ex: bacteria
Eukaryotic
Contains true nucleus
Ex: plants and animals
What is the cell theory?
- The cell is the basic structural unit of of living things
- The cell is the basic functional unit of living things
- All cells are derived from pre-existing cells
What are the essential tasks of a cell? 5
- Obtain food & energy
- Build and maintain the molecules
- Eliminate wastes
- Convert energy from an external source
- Reproduction
What are organelles?
The smaller parts inside of a cell that are not alive but form a cell.
How do organelles maintain the life processes of a cell? (6)
- Intake of nutrients
- Movements & growth
- Response to stimuli
- Exchange of gases
- Waste removal
- Reproduction
What does the cell membrane do?
Control the movement of materials and acts as a filter.
It has a semi-permeable layer made of double lipids
What is Cytoskeleton?
An internal network of fibres made of protein filaments to help maintain cell shape. (With some bacterial cells)
It is the glue of the cell
Cytoplasm
It is like the brain of the cell
Nucleus
The warehouse of the cell
Vacuoles
The powerhouse of the cells
Mitochondria
The cleaners of the cell
Lysosome
The highway of the cells
Endoplasmic reticulum
The UPS or Amazon Prime of the cell
Golgi apparatus
The suit of armour for the plant cell
Call wall
They are the photosynthesis machines of the cell
Chloroplast
Cytoplasm
A jelly substance that fills the cell and suspends all other organelles.
Contains the nutrients required
Nucleus
Controls all cellular functions such as growth and reproduction.
It contains the blueprint for the cell(DNA)
Vital role in the production of ribosomes.
Nuclear envelope
The nucleus is surrounded by it own membrane called nuclear envelope
Nucleolus
The dense centre inside the nucleus
Vaculoles
store and transport nutrients, waste and other substances
Churro
Cenrioles
