Q

What is the life cycle?

A

The series of changes that an organism can go through. For many organisms, this involves growing, changing, reproducing, and dying.

Q

What do all organisms have in common?

A

All living things share the same characteristics of life:
-They are made up of One or more cells
-They need energy to live
-They respond to stimuli (they react to their environment)

Q

What is the Modern Cell Theory?

A
  1. The cell is the smallest living unit in all organisms.
  2. All living things are made of cells.
  3. All cells come from other pre-existing cells

Q

What are multicellular organisms?

A

Complex organisms made up of many cells. They can usually be arranged into tissues, which can make up organs, which can make up organ systems.

15
Q

Define: Asexual reproduction

A

When one parent organism reproduces by itself.

16
Q

Define: Sexual reproduction

A

When two parent organisms reproduce.

17
Q

Define: Nutrients

A

Substances that provide nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of life.

17
Q

Define: Metabolism

A

The set of chemical reactions that maintain the life of an organism.

18
Q

Define: Circulation

A

The movement of something through the body of an organism.

19
Q

Define: Homeostasis

A

A state of steady internal physical and chemical conditions set by the body. It keeps an organism alive despite a changing environment.

20
Q

Define: Adaption

A

A behavior or physical characteristic that allows an organism to survive or reproduce in its environment.

21
Q

What is Classification Hierarchy?

A

Categories developed to organize every discovered organism.

21
Q

What is Biological classification?

A

The process of organizing living things by their structure and how closely related they are.

22
What are the categories in the Classification Hierarchy?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.
23
What is the order of the categories in the Classification Hierarchy?
From the broadest to the most specific. There are fewer and fewer organisms as you get to the more specific categories.
24
What is the Domain?
The Domain is the highest rank in the classification system. It's the broadest of all categories. All organisms fall under these three groups: -Eukarya -Bacteria -Archaea
25
What is the Phylum?
A category groups organisms together on the basis of their fundamental traits.
25
What is the Kingdom?
The second-highest rank in the Classification systems. It's divided into six groups: -Archaebacteria -Eubacteria -Protista -Fungi -Plantae -Animalia Organisms within each Kingdom have different characteristics from organisms in the other Kingdoms.
26
What is the Class?
A set or category of organisms that have some property or attribute in common and differentiated from others by traits.
27
What is the Order?
The different groups of animals in each Class. Ex: primates are in order within the Mammalia Class.
28
What is the Family?
The Family is the subgroup of Order. Ex: there are 16 families within the primates group.
29
What is the Genus?
A group of closely related Species.
30
What is the Species?
The smallest and most specific unit of classification. Species are groups of organisms with similar characteristics that are able to reproduce only with one another. Ex: humans can only reproduce with other humans.
31
Who is Carl Linnaeus?
A Swedish biologist and physician who formalised Binomial Nomenclature, the Modern system of naming organisms. He is known as the "father of taxonomy".
32
What is Binomial Nomenclature?
The system for naming organisms.
33
What does "Binomial" mean and what does it do?
It means "a name with two terms". It defines the Genus of an organism.
34
What does Nomenclature mean and what does it do?
It means "name" or "name to call". It defines the Species itself.
