A muscular organ in most animals, which pumps blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system. Blood provides the body with oxygen & nutrients and assists in the removal of metabolic wastes
Heart
Fine (hair thin) blood vessels that form a network between the arterioles (little arteries) & venules (little veins)
Capillaries
A pair of bean-shaped organs below your ribs & behind your belly. Kidneys filter your blood, removing wastes, controlling the body’s fluid balance & keeping the right levels of electrolytes. All of the blood in your body passes through them several times a day
Kidneys
A large, meaty organ that sits on the right side of the belly. The liver’s main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. It also secretes bile which aid in digestion
Liver
Muscular-walled blood vessels by which blood, which has been oxygenated, is conveyed Away from the heart to all parts of the body
Arteries
Muscular-walled blood vessels by which oxygen-depleted blood is carried toward the heart
Veins
The most common type of blood cell & the principal means of delivering oxygen (O2) & nutrients to body tissues. RBCs contain hemoglobin, a protein which transports oxygen throughout the body
Red blood cells
Cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease & foreign invaders such as viruses & harmful bacteria
White blood cells
Yellowish liquid portion of blood contains water, salts, enzymes, antibodies and other proteins. It is the single largest component of human blood, makes up 55% of the body’s blood volume
Plasma
Tiny disk-shaped blood cells without a nucleus, found in large numbers in blood. They clump together to help your body form clots and stop bleeding
