Biology Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the 3 types of blood vessels in the heart?
Arteries , veins and capillaries
What do the blood vessels do?
Transport blood around the body , delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells and removing waste products
What do arteries do?
Transports blood at high pressure away from the heart into the body
What do the capillaries do?
Transports blood at low speed from the blood and the tissues
What do veins do?
Transport blood at low pressure from the body to the heart
What do veins have?
A wide lumen and the pressure is a lot lower so they only have thin walls. Most carry deoxygenated blood.
What is the role of the valves found inside the veins?
They are used to prevent the back flow of blood
What are capillery walls like?
One cell thick
Capillery characteristics
They have thin walls and are very narrow. Because of this they don’t need to have valves because there isn’t a chance of the blood flowing backwards. They exchange between the blood and the cells in the tissue
Do red blood cells have a nucleus
No
What cell makes anti bodies that bind together to fight disease?
White blood cells
Do red blood cells have a small or large surface area?
Large so oxygen diffuses in and out more efficiently
