Biology Flashcards
If the alleles in a mayching pair are the same… they are called….
Homozygous alleles
What is DNA?
Dna is deoxyribonucleic acid that inherits characteristics of your parents.
What is a chromosome?
Half your chromosomes come from your farther and half from your mother. They depend on your characteristics
What is a gene
Your genes are like your characteristics like your hair colour or eye colour.
Number of present chromosomes in a human body cell
There are 46 overall chromosomes in a normal human body, 26 pairs.
What are alleles?
Different versions of a gene, that code for different versions of a characteristic
What is a homozygous allele?
If the alleles in a matching pair are different, they are called heterozygous alleles.
What is genotype?
The allele pair for each characteristic.
What is a phenotype?
The physical expression of an allele pair.
What is a gamete?
sex cells (eg. sperm, egg, pollen and ovum)
What is the name of the cloned sheep?
Dolly
What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is an inheritance disease.
It affects the lungs and digestive system.
What is polydactyl?
Polydactyly- is a disorder that results in a child being born with extra digits on their hands and feet.
Cloning
Genetically identical
A clone is an organism that is genetically identical to its parent. This means that it has the same genes as its parent, and will therefore look identical.
