Biology Cb2 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules down a concentration gradient through a selectively permeable membrane.
What do phospholipids form?
Phospholipids form a bio layer .
What is the cell membrane made of?
The cell membrane is made of phospholipids and protein.
What happens to the proteins in the phospholipids?
The proteins are scattered through the bio layer
What is the membrane?
Selectively permable.
What is selectively permeable?
This means that some small molecules can cross eaisily, whilst other (larger) molecules are prevented from crossing.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of molecules down a concentration gradient from a high concentration to low concentration.
Why is diffusion important?
Diffiusuison is important to cells because it allows them to gain useful substances they require to obtain energy and grow, and lets them get rid of waste products.
What happens if a animal cell is placed in a low water concentration?
It will LOSE water by OSMOSIS and SHRINK
What will happen if a animal cell is placed in a high water concentration.
It will GAIN water by OSMOSIS and BURST
What will happen to a plant cell if placed in a low water concentration.
It will LOSE water by OSMOSIS and become PLAYSMOLYSED.
