Biology cell structure Flashcards
(24 cards)
cell membrane
separates inside of cell from environment
cytoplasm
gel like fluid inside the cell
eukaryotic cell
includes: organelles, nucleus etc. more complex and found in plants and animals
prokaryotic
includes: genetic material. less advanced as eukaryotic cells. one cell organisms like bacteria
organelles
little organs that have jobs to play in cells
nucleus
contains the dna of the cell and tells the cell what to do and how it’s gonna do it
chromatin
the tangled form of dna spread out through the nuclear membrane
chromosomes
when a cell is ready to divide dna condensed to create them
nucleolus
found inside the nucleus that produces ribosomes
ribosomes
leaves the nucleus to make proteins
endoplasmic reticulum
membrane enclosed passageway for transporting materials (such as protein)
Golgi body
receives the proteins produced from the endoplasmic reticulum. inside the Golgi the proteins are customized to things that the cell can use
vacuole
stores things in a cell
lysosome
garbage collectors that take in all the damaged or worn out cell parts. they are filled with enzymes that break down these cell pieces.
mitochondrion
power house for animal and plant cells. in cellular respiration it creates atp molecules that provide all the cells activity. cells that need more energy have more mitochondrion
cytoskeleton
maintains cell shape. icludes microfilaments made of proteins. and microtubules is which are thin hollow tubes
chloroplast
where photosynthesis happens.
chlorophyll
green pigment in chloroplast
cell wall
shape and support the plant cell
flagella
a tail that helps some bacteria move
what do all cells have?
cell membrane, cytoplasm, genetic material
immune system
many different parts of tissue groups, organ systems and defense cells
innate defense system
first line of defense. engages with anything suspicious
adaptive defense system
specially designed defense system that takes longer but is specifically designed to go after special targets
