Biology Chapter 1 Flashcards
Biology Chapter 1 Study Guide (30 cards)
List the eight characteristics of life.
Adaption, responds to stimuli, growth and development, reproduction, cells, organization, needs energy, homostasis
List the six steps of the scientific method.
State the problem, form the hypothesis, experiment (test the hypothesis), record the results (tables, graphs, chart), analyze results (tables, graphs, charts), draw conculsions
What is Biology?
Biology is the study of life.
Compare and contrast “abiotic” and “biotic”. Give an example of a biotic specimen and an abiotic specimen.
Abiotic is dead or non-living and Biotic is living.
Give an example of an abiotic specimen.
water, air, soil, river
Give an example of a biotic specimen.
animals, plants, birds, fungi
What is the definition of a species?
A species is a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Is a mule considered to be a species and why or why not?
No. Because mules are sterile and are NOT fertile (infertile).
Define homeostasis and give an example of how our body maintains homeostasis.
The regulation of an organism’s internal environment to maintain conditions suitable for survival An example for our bodies and how we maintain homeostasis is that the human body keeps an average temperature of 98.6 Humans are warm blooded and maintain a near-constant body temperature.
Describe the difference between stimulus and a response.
Stimulus is the change in the environment and the response is the reaction of the organism.
What is the meaning of adaptation?
Adaptation is structure, behavior, or internal process that allows a response to stimuli and increases chance of survival in an environment.
Give an example of quantitative data statement and a qualitative data statement.
An example of a quantitative data statement is numerical data like counting, measuring(using SI units). An example of a qualitative statement is observational data (like studying the behavior of gorillas).
Are rabbits a species?
Yes. Because they can reproduce. They are fertile.
What is energy?
The ability to do work. Energy is needed to control the amount of oxygen, food, and water and waste, in the cell.
Plants produce their own energy. True or False
True.
Animals and Fungi must eat plants or organisms that consume plants. True or False
True
What is evolution?
The gradual accumulation of adaptations over time.
Inductive reasoning is from facts/ a general rule is produced. True/False
True
Deductive reasoning is the “if…then facts developed from the general rule”. True/False
True
Law is a rule of nature (like gravity). True/False
True
Theory is a explanation of a natural phenomenon. It is supported by much evidence. True/False
True
What is technology?
using science to help society and solve problems
What is ethics?
the study of the standards of right and wrong
An example of an independent variable:
fertilizer
