QUESTIONS
Determine the number of atoms of each element in the following compounds
H2O
CO2
2 hydrogen 1 oxygen
1 carbon 2 oxygen
Describe the differences between adhesion and cohesion. Give an example of each.
Adhesion is an attraction between molecules of different chemical substances. Cohesion is an attraction between molecules or atoms of the same substance.
Ex: water sticking to the glass is an example of adhesion, but the water that sticks to the surface of the glass pulls more water up behind it because of cohesion.
What is polarity? Why is water polar?
Polarity is an uneven distribution of electrons.
H2O is polar because charges are unevenly distributed.
Why is carbon special?
They can bond together to form very long, durable chains
What are the four macromolecules?
Carbohydrates
Lipids
Nucleic Acid
Proteins
