Biology - Diseases Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are the 4 types of pathogen?
Virus
Bacteria
Fungi
Protists
What are the 3 types of viral infections?
HIV- sexually transmitted, needles, blood
Flu like symptoms after years
Take antiretroviral drugs in that period to stop spreading
Attacks immune system
Measles - droplets in coughing
Rash
Fever
Vaccinated when child
Tobacco mosaic virus
- mosaic pattern in plants
- plants can’t carry out photosynthesis so struggle to grow
What are the two types of bacterial diseases?
Salmonella - unhygienic preparation, diseased chicken
- food poisoning
- stomach cramps
- vomiting
- fever
Gonorrhoea - sexually transmitted
- pain when urinating
- yellow or green discharge
- used to be treated with penicillin but grown resistant
How can disease be prevented?
Hygienic
Destroying vectors
Isolating infected people
Vaccines
Name a fungal disease
Rose black spot - purple and black spots on roses
- less photosynthesis means it doesn’t grow
- can be stopped by fungicides or by stripping plants
- transferee by wind and water
Name a protist disease
Malaria - repeating episodes of fever and can be fatal
Infects liver and red blood cells hiding from immune system
Stays dormant in humans
