biology exam 2 - professor mark smith Flashcards
(16 cards)
cellular respiration
production of energy (ATP) by the cell
Aerobic Respiration
energy production that requires oxygen
- using oxygen to break down sugar into ATP/energy
Aerobic Respiration formula
6O2 +C6H12O6 –> 6H20 +6C02 + 36-38 ATP
Anaerobic Respiration
energy production without oxygen
Aerobic Respiration Steps
- Glycolysis
- Krebs Cycle
- Electron Transport Chain
Glycolysis
the breakdown of sugar into 2 pyruvate molecules
Where in the cell does glycolysis occur?
in cytoplasm of cell, outside of mitochondria
Products of Glycolysis
2 pyruvate
4 ATP
2 NADH
What is needed to start glycolysis?
2 ATP
sugar
Krebs Cycle
pyruvate enters the mitochondria (matrix) and is broken down more into 6 carbon dioxide, 8 NADH, 2 FADH2, 2 ATP
What is needed for Krebs Cycle?
2 pyruvate,
Products of Krebs Cycle
6CO2 + 8NADH + 2FADH2 + 2 ATP
Krebs Cycle Steps
- takes 2 turns in the cycle, (1 cycle for every pyruvate molecule)
- electron carriers that were made (FADH2, NADH) are sent to Electron Transport Chain
Where does Electron Transport Chain occur?
in inner membrane of mitochondria
1st Step - Electron Transport Chain
NADH and FADH2 travel to the ETC and release their electrons to travel down the protein chain
2nd Step - Electron Transport Chain
As the electrons pass each protein, H+ are pushed through the membrane to the other side
