Biology Paper 1 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is diffusion
Movement of particles from high concentration to low concentration
What is osmosis?
Movement of water through a semi permeable membrane to dilute higher consentration.
What is active transport?
Active transport is opposite of diffusion and requires enegry it is the movement of molecules from a low consentration to high consentration through a membrain via carrier proteins.
How can we increase rate of diffusion or osmosis?
We can increase tempurature.
We can increase surface area
we can increase difference in consentrations.
role of bile in digestive system?
breaks down fats into fatty acids (made in liver and stored in galbladder) this takes place in small intestine.
where is amalyze made? and what does it do?
amalyze is a enzyme excreated by salivary glands and pancrease.
breaks down startch into glucose.
What are villi?
Villi are cells in the small intestine that absorb nutrients into the blood stream
What are enzymes?
enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysists that facilitate in crucial chemical reactions.
What does it mean when enzymes are specific?
They only break certain molecules do to there lock and key nature.
In enzyme practical how do you know that amalyase has broken down all of the starch?
The solution will no longer cause iodine to change colour
