Q

How does smoking affect the gas exchange system in the lungs?

A

Many chemicals in tobacco smoke and tar destroy cilia, which causes mucus to start to build up in the small airways making it harder for your to breathe.

Q

Why does yeast make bread rise?

A

The dough with yeast rises because yeast is a living organism that can respire aerobically. Since the yeast has access to an energy store (sugar) and oxygen, it will respire aerobically. The waste product carbon dioxide is produced and gets trapped inside the dough. This then stretches and pulls at the dough using the air bubbles of the dough make the dough rise.

Q

How are stitches caused?

A

When your body can’t get enough oxygen, it will start to respire anaerobically creating the waste product lactic acid. This then causes the pain of stitches, since the lactic acid can not be rid of quickly.
