Biology - second half Flashcards
(39 cards)
Digestive system
Breaks down the food for nutrients
Circulatory system
Transports blood and nutrients around the body
Endocrine system
A network of glands and tissue that create and release hormones throughout the body
Excretory system
The process of getting rid of watse from the body.
Muscular system
Enables movement
Nervous system
Sends and passes signals throughout our body.
Reproduction system
Increasing numbers of organisms
Respiratory system
generating energy from food
Skeletal system
Structural support and protection. The framework of the body
Homeostasis
The body’s ability to maintain it’s internal processes despite the external changes.
Metabolism
The chemical process that maintains life.
Anabolism
Reactions that build up matter
Catabolism
Reactions that break down matter
Enzyme
Proteins that speed up chemical reactions.
Without them reactions would be too slow to maintain life.
Enzyme ‘active site’
The place where the enzyme and substrate bind for a reaction to take place
Denatures
Changes shape
Carbohydrates
Broken down into glucose
Proteins
Broken down into amino acid
Lipids
Broken down into fatty acids and glcerol
Why do foods need to be broken down?
So the smaller/ simpler substances can be absorbed by the small intestines into the blood stream.
Negative Feedback
When a change occurs in a cycle and something is added into it to make it return back to its original state
Positive Feedback
When a change occurs in a cycle and something is added into it increasing the effects/changes.
Does not return to original state
What are the main organs of the Excretory system?
Kidney, Ureter, Bladder and Urethra
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM-
- Made up of the brain and the spinal chord
- recieves and processes the infomation from all over the body and then send out messages one how to respond.
