Biology Terms 🧬 Flashcards
(55 cards)
Selective Adaptation
This is something that happens to animals to help them survive better
DNA
The molecule that carries genetic instructions for life.
nucleotide
The building block of DNA; made of a sugar, phosphate, and base
Chromosomes
A long DNA molecule with part or all of the genetic material.
Chromatin
Loose DNA and proteins in the nucleus before it forms chromosomes
Double helix
The twisted ladder shape of the DNA molecule.
protein
A molecule made from amino acids that does work in the body.
nucleic acid
Large molecules (like DNA and RNA) that store genetic info.
hydrogen bonds
A weak bond that holds DNA bases together.
genome
All the DNA in one cell of an organism.
complementary bases
Bases that pair together in DNA: A with T, and C with G.
Autosome
Any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome.
sex chromosomes
Chromosomes (X and Y) that determine biological sex.
nitrogenous base
The part of a nucleotide that varies: A, T, C, or G.
Nucleus
The part of the cell that holds the DNA.
Homologous Chromosomes
A pair of chromosomes, one from each parent, with similar genes.
Karyotype
A picture of all the chromosomes in a cell.
Banding Pattern
The stripes seen on chromosomes in a karyotype.
Trait
A characteristic, like eye color or height
Allele
Different versions of a gene
Gametes
Reproductive cells: sperm and egg.
Dominant Allele
An allele that shows its trait even with one copy.
Recessive Allele
An allele that only shows when two copies are present.
Heterozygous
Having two different alleles (e.g., Aa).
