Homeostasis
a state of internal balance within an organism
Gene
A specific stretch of DNA that codes for a trait. There are hundreds of these on one chromosome
Homozygous
having two of the same forms of a gene. Ex BB or bb
Pathogenic
capable of causing disease
Adaptation
Any favorable inherited trait that helps an organism survive
Semi-permeable
Allowing some substances to pass through while excluding other substances from doing so
eukaryotic
having a nucleus
prokaryotic
lacking a nucleus
taxonomy
the science of classifying organisms
phenotype
an organism’s physical appearance. Ex: curly hair
genotype
An organism’s genetic make-up. ex. BB, Bb or bb
allele
a form of a gene. ex. the allele for brown eyes
dominant
a gene you only need one copy of in order to express it. This type of gene is indicated by a capital letter
recessive
a gene you need two copies of in order to express it. this type of gene is indicated by a lowercase letter
heterozygous
having two different forms of a gene. ex Bb
homozygous
having two of the same forms of a gene. Ex. BB or bb
diffusion
random movement from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
osmosis
the diffusion of water
unicellular
consisting of one cell. Ex an amoeba is a unicellular organism
multicellular
having more than one cell. Ex, Humans are multicellular organisms
