What is biomechanics and kinesiology

- the study of the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems in relation to their function in human movement and body mechanics

Extensive properties

- depend on the amount of the material
- example: mass

Intensive properties

- are independent of quantity
- example: density

Stress

- intensive property
- force per unit
- measure of the intermolecular resistance within a structure to the deforming actions of an outside force

Strain

- intensive property
- change in length of a structure divided by its original length

Force

- force = mass x acceleration

Tension

- lengthening and narrowing

- shortening and widening

Bending

- superior surface: has tension
- inferior surface: has compression

- parallel to the structure from both sides at the same time
- example: scissors

- provides information about the strength and stiffness of a whole structure

- provides information about the elasticity of a structure
- deformation is not permanent

- signals the elastic limit of the structure
