Biomechanics: Measurements used in linear motion Flashcards
(8 cards)
Define scalar quantity
When measurements are described in terms of just their size or magnitude. Direction is not taken into account. (Examples include: Mass, Speed, Distance)
Define speed
The rate of change of position
What calculation is used to measure speed?
Speed in metres per second (m/s)=(Distance covered in metres (m))/(Time taken in seconds (s))
Define distance
The length of the path a body follows when moving from one position to another
What calculation is used to measure distance?
Distance (m) = Speed in metres per second (m/s) × Time taken in seconds (s)
On a time/distance graph, what does a horizontal line indicate?
That an object is stationary
On a time/distance graph, what does a straight but angled line indicate?
That an object is moving at a steady speed
On a distance/time graph, what does a steep line indicate
The object is moving quickly
