Biomes Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is a biome?
A large community of animals and plants that occupies a specific region.
What is the biosphere?
Regions of the earth occupied by living organisms
-Contains all ecosystems
What are the levels within the biosphere?
- Biosphere
- Biome
- Ecosystem
- Community
- Population
- Species
What is an ecosystem?
Living and non living things that interact with each other - environment
What is an Aquatic Ecosystem?
Water based ecosystem - oceans , rivers
What is a terrestrial ecosystem?
Land based ecosystem
What is a biotic factor?
A living thing in an ecosystem (the organisms)
What is an Abiotic Factor?
Non living things
Give examples for Abiotic factors
Temperature
Rainfall
Salinity
Light availability
What is a Habitat?
Where an organism lives and it provides it with things for survival - area
Define Niche
The role an organism plays in an ecosystem
List the Main Biomes
Desert - dry Forest - wet Savanna - in between grassland and forests Grassland - grass Tundra - cold
What do biomes explain?
How similar climates in a different place supports similar vegetation, on a global scale
How are biomes classified?
According to dominant vegetation within the area
Vegetation is based on soil and climate of area
How is a forest classified?
Lots of water availability , soil and heat
How are savannahs classified?
Transitional between grassland and forest
How are Grasslands classified?
Moderate shortage of soil and water, adequate heat
How are deserts classified?
Extreme shortage of soil and water, adequate heat
How are tundra’s classified?
Insufficient heat to sustain vegetation
What are the key factors affecting biome classification?
Rainfall and temperature
What is Biodiversity?
The variety of plants and animals in an biome
Why is Biodiversity important?
Because if a biome has high Biodiversity and one species is wiped, the others can still sustain and recover.
Resilience
