Biomes Flashcards
major communities of the world; climax and stable communities
Biomes
abiotic factors
Climate
Temperature
Rainfall
most important abiotic factor that determines what kind of vegetation can grow in an area.
Climate
Desert biome
Description - covers 1/5 of Earth’s surface; characterized by lack of moisture
Climate - very dry
Temperature - hot during day, cold during night
Soil - sandy, dry, loose
Rainfall - less than 10 cm in a year
Vegetation - bushes, shrubs, cacti
Animals - lizards, snakes, eagles, owls, toads, insects
Tundra biome
Description - found in the arctic regions; trees do not grow
Climate - cold with limited sunlight
Temperature - -23°F or -5°C
Soil - permafrost
Rainfall - less than 20 cm annually
Vegetation - lichens, mosses, grasses, dwarf shrubs
Animals - reindeer, oxen, rabbits, and caribou and foxes
Coniferous forest biome
Description - abundant in conifer
Climate - very long & cold winter lasting about 6 months
Temperature - below -20° in winter, 15° in summer
Soil - not fertile (needlelike leaves take very long time to decompose)
Rainfall - about 60 cm snow annually (rain, sleet, snow)
Vegetation - pine, fir, spruce
Animals - bears, moose, deer, mice, horses, squirrels
Tropical rainforest biome
Description – found in warm, wet areas near the equator
Climate - rainfall occurs daily, much sunshine
Temperature - 17° to 28° C
Soil - lacks minerals & contains little remains of dead plants and animals
Rainfall - 240 cm in a year
Vegetation - numerous species of trees & orchids
Animals - mammals, amphibians, reptiles & birds
Grassland biome
Description - occurs in all continents
Climate - seasonal
Temperature - usually ranging from hot to cold (70°-80° F)
Soil - dry and thin
Rainfall - 40-80 cm per year
Vegetation - short & tall grasses, sunflowers, shrubs
Animals - mostly herbivores & rodents, dogs, snakes, chickens
Deciduous forest biome
Description - long growing seasons from 4-6 months; predators are eliminated due to hunting and destruction of habitats
Climate - seasonal
Temperature - below freezing during winter but not below 12° C
Soil - rich and grayish brown in color
Rainfall - 75-100 cm a year
Vegetation - trees, lichens, mosses, shrubs
Animals - mice, rodents, deer, rabbits, squirrels, birds, hawks, snakes, frogs, salamanders
